Rice Coffee is made from rice. The rice is ground into a powder and roasted. The powder is rice coffee. There are over 1000 varieties of rice. Each variety has its own unique and distinct flavor. In the Philippines you will find many varieties of Rice Coffee. The texture of Rice Coffee is creamy with or without milk. The taste is somewhat like coffee. Not the same but unique in its own way. Some people prefer tea, others coffee. If you haven't tried rice coffee, I think it fits somewhere in between. Today there are many different varieties available. There is even 3 in 1 which is a mix of rice coffee, sweetener and creamer. The varieties come from the different plantations of rice regions. Each bringing their own unique flavour. I first tried rice coffee several years ago now. It was Banna Blend rice coffee from the North Luzon region in the Philippines. It has a strong creamy coffee flavour. Interestingly it does not contain any caffeine. You can make your own rice coffee. All you need is rice and a fry pan. Simply fry the rice till it looks toasted. That's toasted and not burnt. Crush the rice into a fine powder and you are set. Add boiling water and stir. It's that simple. Naturally I am lazy and prefer to just spoon what I need into a cup. With modern production methods you can buy the 3 in 1 Rice Coffee mix. Just add boiled water and stir. Through avenues like Shopee, rice coffee has become more popular due to its availability online. Before it was very much a local product and only consumed by the locals. With online growth more rice producers are manufacturing rice coffee and selling them nationally through online avenues. The unique taste is due to the roasting process. Rice grain on its own will not give you that flavor. It does need to be roasted or toasted. You can fry the rice but because you need oil or butter the taste is affected somewhat. If you can roast or toast the grains you will achieve that unique creamy taste. Similar to wood fired pizza's in a sense. If you enjoy a strong coffee taste, then rice coffee could be your alternative. The rice coffee black is strong. Without milk the rice coffee looks creamy. That is because rice has a unique starch base. When boiling water is added the starch is released creating a gel with a smooth creamy texture.
